A wonderfully unusual Victorian sterling-silver Albertina watch chain or chatelaine piece, dating to the late 19th century.
Albertina chains were the more decorative feminine counterpart to the gentleman’s Albert watch chain. They were designed to carry a lady’s pocket watch and were often richly embellished with decorative slides, tassels, charms and practical fittings.
This beautiful example features an ornate rectangular plaque decorated with a wonderfully appropriate collection of raised keys—a traditional symbol of the chatelaine or “lady of the house.” Beneath the plaque hangs a dramatic graduated fringe of fine articulated silver chains, creating beautiful movement when worn.
The piece also incorporates an elongated decorative terminal, fine chains and elegant open hooks, allowing a pocket watch, fob or additional chatelaine accessory to be attached. The darkened recesses and softly aged patina emphasise the intricate Victorian detailing.
Today, it could be displayed as part of a chatelaine collection, worn with an antique pocket watch or creatively styled as a necklace, bracelet or statement fob.
